Local Area 2

MONACO: Monaco is divided into several different areas:Monaco Ville – situated at the top of the rock, this is the old town where you will find the palace, cathedral and museums. It is quite a steep climb but there is a small tourist train that will take you up.Fonteville – here you find high-rise, expensive apartments with a small harbour, which is becoming quite popular with bars and restaurants, also home of the Princess Grace Rose Garden and The Columbus Hotel (part owned by racing driver David Coulthard)La Condamine – this is the main harbour area where the cruise ships berth, this also has plenty of restaurants (try Stars and Bars for celeb spotting).Monte Carlo – the expensive, flashy area, home of the Casino, Opera House, Café de Paris and the designer shops.

NICE: Easily accessible from Biot by both train and bus, Nice is a good combination of old and new.The Old Town:Cours Selaya – home of the colourful flower market (open Tuesday – Sundays). This is open all day and a fruit and veg market is open in the mornings. Numerous restaurants surround it, and in the evenings they extend into the flower market space.Colline du Chateau – situated on a hill in between the old town and the port, this park and garden is well worth a visit, even if just for the view.Monument aux Morts – Nice’s magnificent war memorial.Promenade des Anglais - the long stretch of promenade is popular for stroling, cycling and roller blading. The New Town:Nice’s new town has a good shopping area. Based mainly along and around Avenue Jean Medecin, there is also the indoor Nice-Etoile Shopping Mall and a Galleries Lafayette department store. Small French boutiques sit next to British high street names such as Virgin, Body Shop and Claire’s Accessories!!Close to the station is the Russian Cathedral which is well worth a visit, even though quite difficult to find.
